SPECIALIST FIVE ROBERT L. DUNAWAY, UNITED STATES ARMY
Distinguishing himself by heroism in connection with ground operations
against a hostile force on 21 January 1970 while serving as a tank commander
with Troop C; 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment,
in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while the troop was conducting a
reconnaissance mission in dense jungle near the Cambodian border, it came under
an intense North Vietnamese automatic weapons, mortar and rocket-propelled
grenade attack. While his vehicle's fire was directed upon the enemy position,
it was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade, eliminating the electrical system.
With only his machine gun operative, he continued his assault on the enemy,
inflicting numerous casualties. Specialist Dunaway immediately helped his badly
burned crew to safety before the tank exploded. After summoning help Specialist
Dunaway once again entered the contact area to give aid to his wounded comrades.
Specialist Five Dunaway's actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of
the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the
United States Army.
